Miami student, recent grad drown during trip to Lake Cumberland
The bodies of two people were recovered Monday from Lake Cumberland, a popular destination for boaters across the area. The bodies of Yanqi Xing and Guan Lian, both 23, were recovered Monday morning, days after they went missing. Both reportedly disappeared Friday between Safe Harbor Jamestown marina and Wolf Creek Dam. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, both were swimming near a houseboat when the boat started to drift away. Both men tried to catch the boat, but disappeared under the water. Officials with Russell County Emergency Management spent days searching before finding the bodies early Monday. According to officials with Miami University, Lian was a senior at the university's Hamilton Campus. Xing graduated from Miami in December 2019. A statement from the university reads in part, "Miami is providing counseling to students through the H.O.P.E. (Help Over the Phone Everywhere) Line. It is available 24/7 for students to call for immediate support, crisis intervention, and stabilization from a licensed mental health counselor. Call the H.O.P.E. Line at 855-249-5649."
